Negotiators start talks,collector safe

The next round of discussions between the two sides will take place on Friday.

Talks between the negotiators named by the Maoists and that of the Chhattisgarh government got underway in Raipur on Thursday to secure the release of abducted Sukma Collector Alex Paul Menon.

Mediators for the Maoists,former Bastar collector B D Sharma and Hyderabad-based professor G Haragopal,and government mediators S K Mishra and Nirmala Buch,held a long discussion. We had a fruitful discussion. We hope to reach some ground soon, said Buch,a former bureaucrat,after the meeting.

The next round of discussions between the two sides will take place on Friday.

Meanwhile,tribal leader and former MLA Manish Kunjam,who had gone inside the forests carrying medicines for Menon,returned on Thursday after over 45 hours. The collector is safe,his condition stable, he said,giving the first news of Menons health.

Meanwhile,a Cabinet sub-committee headed by Chief Minister Raman Singh,who held another round of meeting,and expressed hope that the issue will be resolved soon.

Naxals kill 2 in Gadchiroli

Maoists have killed three people in Gadchiroli district over two days. There were reports of 12 villagers being abducted too. The police said they had no confirmation of any such incident yet.

While one of the three murders happened on the night intervening April 24 and 25 in Etapalli tehsil,two murders,of Ramsay Narote and Deorao Usendi,were reported on Thursday from Markegaon.

Reason for the murders is not yet known,a police officer said.
