Days after he recommended dissolution of the NCP state committee to facilitate his return to the Congress,K Muraleedharan was sacked by NCP national president Sharad Pawar as chief of the partys state unit on Saturday.

The move comes a day after Muraleedharan, son of veteran Congress leader K Karunakaran and former KPCC chief, said he did not want any position in the Congress for the next two years. I will plead with party president Sonia Gandhi to revoke my suspension from the Congress, he had said.

With Muraleedharan launching another round of fortune hunting, heat is building up in the Kerala unit of the Congress as his return will jeopardise the political prospects of many leaders as well as the recently found peace in the state unit. Except Defence Minister A K Antony, all other Kerala leaders have openly opposed Muraleedharans return.

If he sneaks into the Congress, former loyalists of Karunakaran would regroup under him, upsetting the delicate balance of power between state chief Ramesh Chennithala and Opposition leader Oommen Chandy. A major section of the party leaders fear the state unit would relapse into the old days of intense bickering.
