Filmmaker Jagannath Guha is back with his latest film,Bor Bou Khela, that stars Bengali superstar Tapas Pal,Priyanka, Rahul,Joyjeet and Arjun Chakraborty. The movie is a remake of the 1935 film ,Manmoyee Girls School, that was based on a story written by Rabindranath Mitra.
The story is set against the backdrop of a girls’ school named after its owner Manmoyee, who stipulated that no bachelors or spinsters be allowed to teach in the school. A young man and woman, who aspire for jobs in the school, decide to skirt the rule. They join the school pretending to be married to each other. During their journey as teachers, they eventually fall in love.

The film was remade in many languages. The Hindi remake,Miss Mary (1957) starred Meena Kumari opposite Kishore Kumar. There were also remakes in Marathi,Tamil and Telugu.

The thrill of a wholesome family comedy,a rare event in Bengali mainstream cinema, attracted filmmaker Jagannath Guha to plan a contemporary remake of the same film. He has rechristened it Bor Bou Khela to drive home the fun point.

“I am truly delighted to have been able to direct this film with a crop of young and veteran actors because I really feel there is a vacuum in comedy in mainstream Bengali cinema,” said Guha, who has an established track-record in films and television. The characters have been fleshed out differently in keeping with the times.

The music of the film was launched recently at Royal Calcutta Golf Club and attended by actors Tapas Pal,MP,Kamalika,Priyanka,Rahul,Joyjeet and Arjun Chakraborty. The music is by Ashok Bhadra, who has composed six tracks for the film with voices lent by Babul Supriyo,Mahalakshmi,Javed Ali,Anwesha,Kalpana and Smita. Shishir Gupta of Granite Communications has produced the film. Gupta,Prasun Banerjee and Guha have done the screenplay jointly and lyrics are by Priyo Chatterjee.

“Please watch Bengali films and fill up the theatres,” urged Tapas Pal to the audience. “Never mind whether you find them good, bad or indifferent, but you must watch Bangla films as a sign of love for your ethnic roots, your culture and your language. The industry needs your support to survive and thrive against competition from Mumbai and Hollywood,” he summed up.
Bor Bou Khela is scheduled for a late May release.
