Mumbai cops await custody to establish identity

Ansaris interrogation is essential if we have to ascertain the facts of the case.

The Mumbai Police Crime Branch officers said on Tuesday that the Delhi Polices statements regarding the arrest of 26/11 terror attack accused Syed Zabiuddin Ansari notwithstanding, they would verify from scratch the identity of the man held at IGI Airport on June 21. Only when his identity is established would the Crime Branch probe his role in the attack, said officers.

There are a lot of names doing the rounds regarding the arrest made by the Delhi Police. We cannot just assume anything based on hearsay, but will have to verify right from scratch the identity of the man held. Once we have established whether he is the same man wanted by us,only then will we proceed with further investigations into his role in the 26/11 case, said ACP Crime Niket Kaushik.

Asked whether Ansari would be confronted with 26/11 gunman Ajmal Kasab, currently lodged in Arthur Road Jail,Kaushik said,It is too early to say anything at this stage. We will first secure his custody and then investigate his role in the case.

To get his custody, the Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Tuesday, after securing a production warrant from a local court, filed an application before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate,Delhi. The court has fixed Wednesday for hearing, said Kaushik.

There are three points mentioned in the production warrant. The prima facie involvement in the 26/11 case is registered with us. Ansaris interrogation is essential if we have to ascertain the facts of the case. We have also mentioned that he must be transferred at the earliest into our custody for further recourse, he said.
