As the news of the blasts rang out,Mumbai immediately logged into social networking websites.

As the news of the blasts rang out,Mumbai immediately logged into social networking websites. Unable to reach their near and dear ones on their phones,people from across the world chose this medium to ensure their safety. Status messages requested people to confirm their safety. Many others,who were not within the safe confines of their home,logged in to update themselves with the news.

The city also united on this medium to bail out their fellow citizens in need of help. Many posted their locations and travel route on Facebook and Twitter and offered to pick and drop those in need of help. A few even shared their postal addresses,requesting the stranded lot to drop by in order to reach a safe location.

Twitter handles were created especially in order to offer help and tweets and Facebook updates — like “HelpSheet for #MumbaiBlasts now has125+ choices if you need a doc / place to stay / ride…Do add / RT” and “@MihirBijur: Heading for town from Bandra. Any1 needs a pick up?”#here2help — went viral.

Updates regarding the functioning of trains and taxis going off the roads post midnight also made appearance. Even the latest social networking application by Google,Google+,was flooded with similar messages.

Bollywood celebrities too did their bit. Shahid Kapoor,soon after the news broke out,tweeted: “3 blasts in Mumbai .. Please head home !!!!” Priyanka Chopra,after re-tweeting the control room numbers,added,“Terrible news about the blasts. A request – please do not cause panic by tweeting/ spreading rumors / unconfirmed news.”

Accompanying Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to Delhi with the entire family in order to accept a French honour,Amitabh Bachchan tweeted,“Bomb blasts in Mumbai .. !! God ! I hope people are safe !!”. The event was eventually postponed in the wake of the incidents.

Farhan Akhtar too had to cancel the first look launch of his directorial project Don 2,to be held in Andheri. He then tweeted a series of messages,expressing grief,“Cowards strike again! Condolences to all who have lost someone dear. To the rest,please do not panic. Get home safe.”

Eventually,as the news sunk in and situation settled,a sense of despair too took over. One resident’s post on Facebook read: “It’s never a question of whether with our city,it is merely a question of when….”
