This year,Eid will be doubly special for the Khakras. Days before the end of the holy month of Ramzan, their 18-month-old son Rehan returned home from hospital on Saturday, after being treated for injuries he sustained when their maid flung him from the fourth floor terrace of their house.
Rehan miraculously survived the fall, and his family was understandably overwhelmed with relief and joy on his return. It is only because of the grace of God that I have got my son back. Miracles like this can only happen during the holy month of Ramzan, said his mother,Tehseen Khakra.
Last Sunday,Rehan was thrown from the terrace by the Khakras minor maid. Days earlier,on August 15,the maids grandmother, who comes to the Khakras house to collect zakat alms,is believed to have requested them to take the orphan girl in their care. After just four days,Tehseen said she saw what she called telling signs.
She would steal small amounts of money from the house. She would even take the childrens chocolates without telling them, but I never said anything for fear of humiliating her. She was like a daughter to me. She would even call me Mummy, said Tehseen.
On Sunday afternoon,Tehseen reprimanded her for breaking expensive glassware and threatened to send her back to her grandmother. Even after I scolded her,she didnt seem vengeful enough to do what she did. In fact, just before leaving, she ensured me that she would take care of Rehan, said Tehseen.
On the pretext of playing with the child, the maid took Rehan to the terrace attached to the house and pushed him straight down. A few minutes later,Rehans sister Rumina got a call from their ground floor neighbours saying that the child was lying on the ground in a pool of blood. Rehans father,Aqueel Khakra, who was at home when the incident took place, rushed downstairs. He was lying in a pool of blood and his eyeballs were rolled up. A neighbouring doctor checked his pulse and told us he had stopped breathing. For 10 minutes,he had stopped breathing. Those were the most desperate 10 minutes of my life, said Aqueel.
Like the Khakras, other residents of Honda Mansion also believe that Rehan is a miracle baby. It is nothing short of a divine intervention that he has survived and sustained no serious injuries, said a neighbour of the Khakras.
