The controversial Television Rating Point TRP system that governs TV content is set to undergo a review with the Information amp; Broadcasting Ministry on Wednesday constituting an expert committee to examine the mechanism and suggest measures to make it transparent,accurate and more representative.
To be headed by FICCI Secretary General Amit Mitra,the expert committee will have the Directors of IIM Ahmedabad and the
Indian Statistical Institute,Kolkata,Rajiv Mehrotra,Managing Trustee of PSBT,journalist Neerja Choudhary,former secretary
D S Mathur and a representative of the Information amp; Broadcasting Ministry.
The committees terms of reference encompass a range of issues from viability of the TRP system in portraying the demographic profile of the viewership,factoring in of viewership of the rural segments and regions such as Jamp;K and Northeast and viewership of all distribution platforms including Terrestrial,Cable,DTH amp; IPTV.
The committee will also assess and aim to bring in transparent norms in selection of sample homes used for generating TRP ratings serious questions have been raised about the improper selection of sample homes and it is alleged that a very sample concentrated in urban areas is used to generate TRP ratings.
The report of the committee will be submitted three months after its first meeting.
