MHA to hold talks with BlackBerry service providers

Indian security agencies have been facing problems in intercepting and decoding BlackBerrys Enterprise and Messenger services.

In order to sort out the security concerns clouding the operation of BlackBerry smartphones in the country,the Ministry of Home Affairs MHA will hold a meeting with various service providers offering BlackBerry services and officials of the Department of Telecom DoT,later this week.

Indian security agencies,as reported by The Indian Express,have been facing problems in intercepting and decoding BlackBerrys Enterprise and Messenger services. Research in Motion RIM the makers of BlackBerry is reported to have shifted the onus of providing information access to the service-providers. In this context,service providers like Airtel,Vodafone,Tata,BSNL and MTNL will now be called in to clarify whether they will ensure interception and monitoring of BlackBerry services.

As per government sources,the MHA is likely to tell the service providers that only those services that can be intercepted by security agencies will remain operational.
