In a recent directive that has got officials both amused and wary, the Ministry of Home Affairs MHA has asked its officials to report to work at 9 am and not leave office before 5.30 pm.

Ostensibly prompted by growing instances of officials not reporting to work on time and leaving office early, the order, issued in the form of a circular, has already been widely circulated in North Block. Ministry sources, however, maintained that the directive is of a routine nature and that such circulars are issued from time to time.

MHA sources added that Home Minister P Chidambaram himself reports to office at 9 am every day sharp and is desirous of having senior officials in their offices by that time.

The order has already become a subject of discussion in North Block corridors. A significant number of the staff working in the Home Ministry is in office way beyond office hours on a regular basis. There are times when many officials and their respective staff are in office till 7 or 8 pm given the work pressure. Expecting them to report at 9 am could be asking for a lot, said an official, requesting anonymity.
