Not only does it have the countrys geographical centre within its jurisdiction,Nagpur is fast emerging as a transit point for Naxals in the country, the government now believes.
As per sources in the Union Home Ministry, there are credible bits of information available to suggest that Naxalites from Naxal-affected states,Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand in particular, are increasingly using Nagpur as a transit point.
Because of its geographical location,Nagpur is a place from where it is easy to move to some of the Naxal hotbeds, a source said. In fact, the Nagpur Police has confirmed many a times that Naxals from Chhattisgarh often visit hospitals in Nagpur for treatment, the source added. Having noticed Naxal movement in and around Nagpur, security agencies are now keeping a strict vigil in the area.
Nagpurs proximity to Gadchiroli, one of the worst-affected Naxal areas,is also being attributed as one of the reasons why Naxalites are increasingly visiting, passing through and staying in the district.
A theory connecting Nagpur and the slain Maoist spokesperson Cherukuri Rajkumar alias Azad has already been doing the rounds. While the security agencies claimed to have killed Azad in an encounter in Andhra Pradesh recently, there are indications that Azad was picked up from Nagpur where he had gone to meet somebody.
