Mango lovers are in for a treat this summer as output is expected to rise by about 25 per cent,inspite of temperatue soaring prematurely,scientists have said.
“Mango production this season will rise by about 25 per cent inspite of the temperature rising before time,” Lucknow- based Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture’s crop production department head S R Bhrigvanshi said.
The country had produced 1.31 crore tonnes of mango last year.
According to scientists at the Institute,which is known for its mango research,temperatures have soared by 4-5 degrees all of a sudden,which will have an adverse impact on production,but output,nevertheless,will rise by 25 per cent this year.
“We were looking forward to record production this season before the temperature soared in March,which will have an impact on the output,” Bhrigvanshi said.
“The crop is good this time. We expect 20-25 per cent increase in output this time. But production could have been even better had the temperature had not been so high,” All India Fruit Producers and Exporters Association President B D B Ramchandani said.
India produces about half of 2.3 crore tonnes of mango produced world wide.
