A concert at Kashmir University was called off after some students launched a Facebook campaign, denouncing it as immoral and haraam prohibited in Islam. The charity concert,Ilhaam, was being organised by students of the universitys Business School and was scheduled to be held on July 3.
The concert has been cancelled, Business School Director Prof Shabir Ahmad Bhat said. This programme was being organised by students and we were trying to help them. But some students opposed it,saying there are better ways to raise funds. We are an academic institution and we do not want to get in a controversy,so we decided to cancel the fundraising event.
The concert was meant to raise funds to sponsor education of children of an orphanage. Some students, however, said that since music was haraam,it was not proper to raise money this way for such a noble cause. They launched a Facebook campaign,Against Ilhaam No charity with Haraam means,to protest and rally support against the event. Some students also lodged their protest with the authorities through the universitys online feedback forum.
The student organisers of the concert, meanwhile, are tightlipped.
This is an internal issue of our department. We dont want to make any statement about it, said Basim-un-Nisa,one of the organisers. Sources in the university said those opposed to the concert included a good number of students and teachers from the Business School as well.
Opposition to the concert had grown louder after the Business School announced a farewell party for its outgoing students on July 5 that was to feature fashion and dancing shows. The party too has now been cancelled.
Meanwhile, supporters of the concert too have taken to Facebook to vent their frustration. dis is reeaaaaally unfortunate8230; Ilhaam stands cancelled, read a post. People who oppose Ilhaam are idiots8230; This is all due 2 some freaks sendin d VC threat letters.
