Krishna calls Libyan counterpart for help to evacuate Indians

External Affairs Minister S M Krishna on Tuesday telephoned Libyan Foreign Minister Mussa Kussa.

External Affairs Minister S M Krishna on Tuesday telephoned Libyan Foreign Minister Mussa Kussa and requested him for more support to evacuate Indians,mostly workers in the construction sector and oil fields.

Kussa was urged to grant aircraft landing rights in towns like Sehba,Sirte and Kufra in southern Libya where the situation is largely peaceful and Indians are stranded nearby.

Krishna made the call after New Delhi was facing difficulties in getting aircraft landing rights in these interior airfields.

Three flights will now go to Tripoli every day for the next 10 days to bring back Indians. Till now,only two flights were going to Tripoli,that too on alternate days.

Krishna also requested the Libyan minister to give docking rights to five more ships.

Another batch of 331 Indians from Libya arrived early Tuesday,taking the total number of people evacuated by the four Air India special flights to 1,083.

Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed said 4,500 Indians would have been evacuated from Libya by late on Tuesday night. There are about 18,000 Indians in Libya.

The latest figures say that 200 Indians have crossed over to Egypt by land. Commercial flights have been ordered to evacuate 4,000 more people. Three flights would leave from Tripoli tonight, Ahamed said.
