Fatal accidents at steel units operated by state-run SAIL and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited have claimed the lives of 132 personnel in the last four years,including 39 this year,Parliament was informed today.
While 104 Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) employees were killed during the period,RINL reported 28 fatal accidents,Steel Minister Virbhadra Singh said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
Singh added that a total of 457 accidents have been reported by the two steel companies in the last four years,of which 129 cases were reported up to October this year.
Besides contract workers,SAIL currently has over 1.25 lakh regular employees. RINL employs about 17,000 people.
Singh said inquiry committees were constituted to probe into the cause of each fatal accident at the concerned plants and based on the findings,appropriate measures were suggested.
It was recommended that employees should be subjected to training programmes and periodic mock drills,among other steps,he said.
“There has been no damage to property on account of these accidents,” the Steel Minister said.
The two steel majors spent over Rs 2,966 crore during the first six months this fiscal for maintenance of their plants,Singh said.
Out of this,SAIL spent Rs 2,583.68 crore for the maintenance of nine units across the country till September 30,while RINL utilised Rs 382.48 crore.
