Members of the Sonia Gandhi-led National Advisory Council NAC today expressed concern regarding the plight of the Jarawa tribe of Andaman and Nicobar Island in the wake of a video footage that surfaced recently.
We expressed concern over the deplorable situation of the exploitation of the Jarawa tribe that came to light recently, said NAC member Harsh Mander,after the meeting chaired by Sonia today.
The NAC also deliberated on a slew of issues including the need for a national programme for denotified tribes,revamp of policies and programmes to address urban homelessness and social security for unorganised sector.
During the meeting Aruna Roy and Mander were learnt to have also presented the framework for pre-legislative consultation mechanism for the government.
The council deliberated on the draft proposals of some of its working groups which are still work in progress, said a communique issued by the NAC after the meeting today where no final decisions were taken.
The council is slated to meet again on February 17.
