In an email interview with IndianExpress.com,Harsh Chopra tells about Intertek and its plans for India. Chopra is the Country Head of the firm.

Can you give us a brief introduction to Intertek?

Intertek is an international provider of quality and safety services to a wide range of global and local industries. Intertek provides testing,inspection and certification of products,commodities and systems and a range of other services.

We operate a global network of laboratories and offices with over 25,000 people in more than 100 countries around the world.

Apart from major global and local companies around the world more than twenty governments including Bangladesh,Ecuador,and Saudi Arabia are also customers.

How old is Intertek in India?

Intertek has been operating in India for over 10 years and contributing successfully as quality providers across various domains.

Can you specify the type of services provided to your customers?

We test,inspect and certify electrical,electronic,gas and oil-powered products,as well as building materials for both manufacturers and retailers around the globe.

Product safety testing,performance testing and benchmarking,electro-magnetic compatibility (EMC) testing and Systems Certification are some of Interteks core capabilities for these industries. Proof of compliance can result in the issuance of marks by Intertek,including the ETL Listed and WH Marks in North America,and the S,GS,ASTA,BEAB,and CE marks in Europe.

Are there any exclusive services which Intertek provides to the Indian territory?

Intertek helped in fast-tracking the Air-conditioner Energy Labelling program in India. Also,Intertek is the first organization to be associated with bio fuel testing from India

Which sectors have been more prompt in going for certification than others?

Sectors which are more aggressive in certification are Textiles,Food,Electrical products,Auto Sector and Chemical Industry. India as a market is highly unorganized but manufacturers have now realized the need for inculcating sound processes in line. Certifications not only encourages international trade but they also give a competitive advantage to our clients in their own market.

How significant is the role of certifications in a B2B module?

Yes testing and certification is a must even in a B2B module .An end product is an amalgamation of a lot of ancillaries working is close coordination with the manufacturer of any product ,which are all a part of the B2B module.

As per the EU directive under REACH,all chemical substances that are manufactured in or imported into the EU in amounts of over 1 tonne per year need to be registered with the EU Chemicals Agency (ECHA).

What kind of services do you have for the food segment?

Intertek offers a very wide range of services across the globe (including India)to the Agriculture and food sector with a farm-to-fork concept in mind.

Food segment is a complex subject insofar as India is concerned and probably will remain this way to a large extent considering the ground realities.

What has been your experience working with the Indian firms?

What are your future expansion plans for next 2-3 years?

Intertek is investing in new capabilities in Food,renewable energy Testing and Certification and expansion in Footwear and Hardline testing.
