An eighth semester student of the Indian Institute of Technology IIT,Guwahati,is missing since Saturday, with the police registering a case of suspected kidnapping. Guwahati City SSP Anand Prasad Tiwari, however, said it looks more like a missing case with very little primary evidence indicating an abduction.
Ajay Kumar Yadav, who hails from Jaipur,is a student of electrical and electronics engineering stream. He was a boarder of the Kameng hostel in the IIT campus located in north Guwahati.
While the student remains untraceable since Saturday afternoon, the police have traced his last presence on the basis of calls made from his cellphone. It was late Saturday afternoon that his cellphone was last active at Paltanbazar where the main Guwahati railway station is located, City SSP Tiwari told The Indian Express.
Since then his cellphone has remained switched off.
The SSP said the police have not found any input indicating the student had any enmity with anyone in the campus. We have also not found any input about the student indulging in substance abuse, Tiwari said.
Tiwari, however, suspected that he might have disappeared on his own due to depression that he was likely to have developed in the past weeks. We have gathered that the student had failed in the eighth semester examination, which might have led to his depression, the SSP said.
IIT sources said Yadavs performance had gone down since the sixth semester.
