Reacting to Environment Minister Jairam Rameshs statement that the IIT and IIM faculty is not world class and that world-class research cannot happen in government set-up,IIM and IIT directors said while there is scope for improvement, running down these institutions by a senior minister is thoroughly unbecoming. At least two IIM directors and an IIT director, whom The Indian Express spoke to,gave the sense of disquiet among the fraternity about Ramesh8217;s comments.
Director of IIM-Kozhikode Debasish Chatterjee said,Most IIM professors are themselves products of IIMs and IITs,so to say only students are good and faculty is not, does not hold8230; if I expect world class governance from the government and that cannot happen in government system, what will that say of the minister?
An IIT director,on condition of anonymity, said making a sweeping statement against the faculty is absolutely unbecoming. IIM-Ahmedabads Director Sameer Barua said,Institutes like IIM-A have been dealing with shortage of faculty and due to this, research has taken a back-seat.
