Quality of SRA buildings needs to be reviewed, says Shabana Azmi

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has agreed to look into anomalies in some Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) schemes,non-governmental organisation (NGO) Nivara Hakk, headed by actor Shabana Azmi. “The CM has agreed to constitute a committee to look into our demands. There needs to be an audit of the quality of the construction of SRA buildings. Leaking roofs, bad sewerage systems, lack of roads, schools etc are some of the issues that need to be addressed,” said Shabana Azmi, who along with architect P K Das had made a presentation to the CM on the lack of proper town planning policy for SRA houses. Representatives from Nivara Hakk had met the CM on May 24. Azmi said,“Our experience while rehabilitating the people from Sanjay Gandhi National Park to the Chandivali SRA houses has taught us a lot. We have realised that even though SRA are proper houses, these people live in slum-like conditions. There is an urgent need for the policymakers to look into that”.
