The third phase of polling in Uttar Pradeshs 15 constituencies registered an estimated 44 to 45 per cent turnout,with the highest percentage of about 50 per cent reported from Sitapur and Jhansi.
Among the high-profile seats,the turnout was lower,with Lucknow and Kanpur seeing only about 35 per cent and 39 per cent polling,and Sonia Gandhis seat Rae Bareli seeing 46 per cent.
While the low Lucknow turnout was in keeping with past trends,48 per cent of Rae Bareli had voted in 2004.
Chief Electoral Officer Anuj Kumar Bisnoi said the polling remained peaceful.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati was among the early voters,reaching the booth at Lucknow Montessori School with BSP general secretary Satish Chandra Mishra and the partys Lucknow candidate Akhilesh Das,around 7.15 am.
BJP president Rajnath Singh cast his vote at a PWD office near Raj Bhavan.
There were reports of EVM breakdowns at a few places,but this was soon fixed. The CEOs office also received reports about poll boycott at a few booths in Fatehpur,Lucknow,Mohanlalganj,Hamirpur,Kanpur Dehat and Hardoi. Elections were held in 15 constituencies spread across 16 districts.
