Asserting that his party has always been for strong punishment to those involved in anti-national activities,Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh on Monday said any decision on adopting a resolution in the Jamp;K Assembly seeking clemency for Afzal Guru will be taken only by the party high command.
Our stand on such issues has always been clear. We have all along been for strong punishment to those involved in anti-national activities, Singh said. However,a decision about the Congress stand over the issue in Assembly will be taken only by the party high command.
Guru,a convict in the 2001 Parliament attack case,has been awarded death penalty by the Supreme Court,and his mercy plea is pending before President Pratibha Patil. An Independent MLA,Sheikh Abdul Rashid,has submitted a resolution in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly,seeking clemency for Guru.
