Deupty Commandant of CRPF Prakash Ranjan Mishra, one of the recipients of Shaurya Chakra this year, survived five bullet wounds during an anti-Maoist operation Panther in Jharkhands Chatra district in September last year. He bled for nearly six hours as an Indian Air Force helicopter couldnt land due to thick cloud cover. Hit by the bullets for the first time in his life,he continued to lead his team of 24 personnel and was successful in eliminating sub-zonal commander of Naxals Raghuvanshi alias Maheshji.
I was one of the first people who volunteered to join CoBRA the elite anti-Naxal security force when it was formed in 2009, says the 41-year-old,who has been serving in the areas affected by Left Wing Extremism for the last eight-and-a-half years and not taken a leave in the last four years.
Mishra, who hails from Patna, joined the CRPF in 1997 as a sub-inspector. It CRPF was a force that I had seen working in nearby areas, he says. Mishra became an Assistant Commandant in 2002 and Deputy Commandant in 2007. He was posted to Jharkhand in 2005.
Currently on deputation with Jharkhand Police as Chatras Additional Superintendent of Police Operations,Mishra has also been recommended for a Police Medal for Gallantry taking his tally of gallantry awards to six, which includes a Presidents Police Medal for Gallantry in 2012.
For security reasons,Mishra, who has taken part in 20 encounters, does not give details of his acts that won him the other five awards. His first award came in June 2009 for a 2007 operation.
His medals have made him a prize catch for the Maoists, but the officer does not seem to be affected by it. There is of course the chance of death. But thinking of it will only invite fear, he says with a smile.
