Jugal Kishor was in for a shock when he checked his balance at a Punjab National Bank ATM here on Tuesday morning. With his account balance showing Rs 59 crore, this carpenter from Ahmedabad had turned a crorepathi overnight.

Kishor called up the chartered accountant who files his IT returns and pleaded with him to get the bank to take back the money. With CA Purshottam Khandelwals help Kishor contacted the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industries GCCI,which subsequently asked the bank to take back the money. He is an honest man. Although he earns no more than Rs 2 lakh a year,he files his tax returns regularly, said Khandelwal.

We contacted the Gujarat Circle Head of the PNB and requested him not to freeze Kishors account. He has a balance of Rs 2.50 lakh in it. We requested the bank to keep this amount and remove the extra money, said GCCI vice-president Sameer Patel, adding that the bank soon agreed to their suggestion.

The GCCI said the PNB has since withdrawn the amount from Kishors account and settled the matter.

The incident occurred at Vastrapur branch of Punjab National Bank. V P Goswami,Senior Manager Marketing,PNB,said,The amount was not credited in his account. It was a technical mistake where we suspect that the account number that was to be fed in the banks database got fed as amount in the persons account. When we checked his account statement, there was no credit of the sum. It only flashed in his account erroneously. We have taken up the matter with the head office and are investigating it further.
