8220;The Government is likely to import more sugar to meet the current shortfall and also to put a check on the rising price of the essential commodity,8221; NCDEX8217;s Chief Economist Madan Sabnavis,said.

Currently,sugar prices have climbed to an all-time high of Rs 40 per kg.

The Government is likely to import sugar after the end of the harvest season in April.

While the demand for sugar is 23-million tonnes,only around 15-million tonnes was produced last season due to scanty rainfall.
