Govt ‘assures’ Trinamool: Will move against Justice Ganguly

TMC chief whip Derek OBrien demanded the retired judges removal.

Leading the chorus for Justice (retired) A K Gangulys ouster from the West Bengal Human Rights Commission,the Trinamool Congress is learnt to have got an informal assurance that the government would advise the President to initiate the process.

Sources said a Cabinet minister told a Rajya Sabha MP of the party on Tuesday that soon after consultation on Mamata Banerjees letters to the President,the government will seek initiation of due process for the retired judge’s removal from the constitutional post. The Prime Minister could advise the President on the matter,the TMC MP was said to have been told by the minister.

After demanding a discussion in the Rajya Sabha for over a week,the Trinamool MPs finally got their way by disrupting the Lokpal Bill debate seeking a few minutes to speak on Ganguly. Gangulys ouster has been demanded for alleged sexual misdemeanour. A woman lawyer has made the allegations.

While Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairperson P J Kurien would not allow it,SPs Ram Gopal Yadav,who was about to speak on the Lokpal issue,yielded to the TMC demand. TMC MPs said they had been demanding time to speak on this for a while. It looked that the Lokpal debate would not go on peacefully if TMC was not allowed a few minutes.

TMC chief whip Derek OBrien demanded the retired judges removal. Men in position of power misuse their power and do everything to suppress the voice of the victim…. This gentleman should resign,be arrested or President should sack him, OBrien said amid shouts of shame shame.

He had brought disgrace. We cannot even call him justice anymore, he said and added that the case deserved such attention because it involved men misusing power. Members from all parties associated themselves with the TMCs intervention that lasted for about 3 minutes.

AAP leader Sanjay Singh and other party members were illegally detained in Srinagar's Doda, along with former Delhi minister Imran Hussain. Singh was detained prior to addressing a press conference about the arrest of the party's MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act. He accused the BJP of resorting to "thuggery" and his detention drew support from other opposition leaders.
