In a significant development in the Ruchika Girhotra case, the Haryana police on Saturday arrested Gajendra Singh on whose testimony the police had booked Ruchikas brother Ashu in six false cases of auto theft.

Police said Gajendra,a resident of Bihar, had been living in Accord Hills on Baner Road in Pune for the past few years, where he ran a dhaba. Senior inspector Mahadev Chavan of the Chaturshringi police station said a team of Haryana police, led by sub inspector Bharat Singh, picked up Gajendra from Baner Road around 11.30 p.m. on Friday. The Haryana police later produced him before Judicial Magistrate A S Lanjewar at the Pune court, seeking his transit remand.

Gajendra Singh, who had been arrested earlier in 1994 for auto thefts, had named Ashu and his friend Sandeep as his accomplices but the court had acquitted them of all charges and held Singh solely responsible for the thefts. Singh later absconded and was named a proclaimed offender.

Just a few weeks ago,Ashus father Subash Girhotra had said,The police wanted Gajinder to run away as they knew he would speak the truth and disclose how he was forced to implicate Ashu and name him as his accomplice.

Now his arrest could give a vital clue into the case.

Meanwhile, the CBI is likely to take up investigation of the three FIRs registered by the Haryana Police against former Haryana DGP SPS Rathore. Highly placed sources in the government said the Union Home Ministry had conceded the recommendation of the Haryana government on handing over the investigation to the CBI.
