Accused of perjury or providing false information to the Supreme Court,Narmada Bachao Andolan NBA,the 22-year-old activist group of Medha Patkar,is facing the threat of being blacklisted.
The organisation, which led gritty campaigns against dams in Narmada Valley,is now on the brink of ignominy for allegedly misrepresenting in the SC that the state government was in actual possession of 284.03 hectares of land acquired from farmers in five villages. Madhya Pradesh contends the group was supplying the court with false information.
An inspection by the Indore District Judge on behalf of the SC,the state said in an application, later revealed that the land in question was still in the possession of the local farmers, who were cultivating it.
The government said an NBA representative present at the site had even acknowledged to the judge that the farmers were in possession,a statement contradictory to what they said in court under oath. The state now wants the SC to commence perjury proceedings against NBA.
Issuing the notice, the SC warned the group that its explanation,if not found satisfactory, may lead the court to consider blacklisting it. It is further clarified that if this court is not satisfied with the reply, the court may proceed to consider the question whether respondent no. 1 NBA should be blacklisted or not, it said. The NBA has time till April 19 to explain.
