A small quantity of explosive material was found in the cargo hold of a Kingfisher Airline plane that flew to Thiruvananthapuram from Bangalore on Sunday morning.

The Bangalore police has sent a team to the Kerala capital where the 20-30 gram of material was discovered after the Bangalore-Thiruvananthapuram flight IT 4731 landed at around 8.30 am,with 27 people on board.

Other teams are quizzing the private ground handling staff at the Bangalore airport from where the flight took off at 6.30 am.

It was not a bomb that could explode since there was no triggering device. It was a small quantity of explosive material that was found when the hold of the flight was being cleaned. This was wrapped in a Malayalam newspaper dated January 13, said Deputy Commissioner for Police in the Bangalore International Airport region Basavaraj Malghati.

The police are not ruling out the possibility of the flight carrying the material when it flew into Bangalore at 9.15 pm on Saturday. We are questioning everyone involved with the cargo on the flight at Bangalore over the last two days, Malghati said. The security responsibility for the cargo on flights rests with the airlines and the private agencies handling ground operations, police and BIA said. Security officials are concerned as the baggage hold area is out of reach of passengers.
