100 hurt as forces fire on protesters in Syria
DAMASCUS: More than 100 people were injured as Syrian security forces fired at and teargassed thousands of protesters in Daraa on Sunday,a human rights activist at the scene said. The security forces backed by police fired live rounds at the demonstrators,numbering more than 10,000, the witness said. They are also firing tear gas mixed with toxic products. Protests broke out in three other cities as well,a rare event in a police state that brutally represses dissent.
Opposition leaders in Yemen join forces
SANAA: For the first time since protests began,Yemens opposition leaders attended the protest as a group on Saturday. When the people come out for change,there is no voice louder than theirs, Yassin Saeed Noman,head of the Joint Meetings Parties,Yemens opposition coalition. He was surrounded by other leaders,including those from the Islamist party. Meanwhile,minister Huda al-Baan resigned to protest the killing of 52 demonstrators. Baan is the third minister to resign in as many days.
Majority says yes to Egypt referendum
CAIRO: Partial results from a third of Egypt8217;s provinces Sunday showed massive turnout and a vote overwhelmingly in favor of constitutional changes that eliminate restrictions on political rights and civil liberties. Results from 10 of 29 provinces showed 65 to 86 percent of voters saying 8220;yes8221; to the changes,which would allow national elections no later than September. Meanwhile,four human rights organisations have complained of irregularities in the voting.
