‘Disillusioned’ with rebel activities,six Maoists surrender in Malkangiri

On September 14,Malkangiri police killed 13 armed Maoist cadres in a forest in a fierce encounter.

Days after police in Malkangiri district of Orissa gunned down 13 Maoists in an encounter,six Maoists on Monday surrendered before police citing disillusionment with rebel activities.

The Maoists surrendered before Malkangiri SP Akhileshwar Singh and were suspected of having a hand in blasting a pipeline,blowing up several buildings and extortion.

On September 14,Malkangiri police killed 13 armed Maoist cadres in a forest in a fierce encounter. The Maoists,suspected to be part of the Kalimela Dalam,were camping inside Silakota forest when a team led by Singh swooped down on them.

Police could only identify 10 of the 13 deceased.

Malkangiri SP said the six Maoists belong to Ranginiguda and Raleguda areas. They are Raju Hentala (43),Bhanja Hentala (35),Purushottam Khara (27),Rupa Khila (42),Tripati Khara (25) and Gopinath Pangi (28). They collected information,organised meetings in remote villages and acted as couriers.

However,none of the surrendered Maoists carried arms.

The surrendered Maoists said they decided to lead a normal life realising Maoists had deviated from their ideology.
