District and Sessions Judge Srinagar Kaneez Fatima dismissed the case as the prosecution failed to produce evidence. No witness turned up for the prosecution.

Twenty-eight years after the J-K Police booked 17 persons allegedly for digging the cricket pitch during India-West Indies ODI,a Srinagar court on Tuesday acquitted the accused.

District and Sessions Judge Srinagar Kaneez Fatima dismissed the case as the prosecution failed to produce evidence. No witness turned up for the prosecution.

The court gave ample time to the prosecution to produce the evidence in the case but they failed to do so, said advocate Mir Urfi, who has been pleading for the accused along with advocate Mir Shafaqat Hussain for the last seven years. That is why the court has dismissed the case and acquitted the accused of all the charges.

On October 13,1983 when the first ODI in the state was being played at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Cricket Stadium between India and the West Indies,a group of young men took to streets protesting against it. And after India lost, the police booked 17 persons for digging the cricket pitch.
