The last season of Desperate Housewives had its fair share of brilliance. It ended with Paul Young being convicted for a crime that he did not commit and we assured ourselves that theres always another season.

This season the story opens with Brees Marcia Cross husband Orson Kyle MacLachlan walking out of her life. Not wanting to lose a good friend Bree comes clean and tells good friend Gaby Eva Longoria Parker that 10 years ago Gabys mom-in-law died after being hit by a car that Brees son Andrew was driving. Lynette Felicity Huffman and Tom Doug Savant face a rough road ahead as they welcome a fifth child to their ever growing family and have a surprise visitor Reene Perry,Vanessa Williams, the loaded ex-wife of a professional ball player. Susans Teri Hatcher and Mikes James Denton near-to-bankruptcy situation forces them out of their home and into a small rented apartment. The duo rents out their house at Wisteria Lane but, little does Susan know that it has actually been rented out to the alleged psychotic killer Paul Mark Moses, who mysteriously returns to the neighborhood as the new tenant.

When the soap began in 2004,it was about four sexy women with strong identities. Through the seasons, all the four characters including Susan,Lynette,Bree and Gaby had achieved a quality of life as vivid as it could get8230;something that was expected to continue this season too. But theres a new twist. The brisk, patronising and jovial womens solid group seems to have outgrown itself overnight. Its hard to see Susan struggling to make ends meet. She does not,as it turns out,go to those ladies luncheons that often. Her bed-hopping habits too seem to have been calmed and shes definitely gone slack, but, not silent. We loved the strong-headed,career woman Lynettes I-care-a-damn-about-my-family attitude. Though this season, its not projects and deadlines that she is chasing. Instead Lynettes attention has shifted towards her ever-growing brood as she tries to establish her position as a controlling mom. Theres a twist to Brees character too. Through the other seasons,Bree, who was envied for being the perfect mom and wife, suddenly is left with no family to care for…and her fascination for Green, her new contractor, reminds us more of Susan than the old prude Bree!

The secrets get darker and the action gets juicier this season. No doubt that the most gripping moment of the new season was the return of Paul… Hes got a grudge against the neighborhood, has an evil plan and a new wife. No one actually cared much about Paul and he could have stayed in jail as he was guilty but his return is surely giving sleepless nights to the residents of the neighbourhood. Even if he hadnt killed Felicia, the crime he was framed and convicted for,we knew he had killed Martha Huber as a way of getting back for the death of his wife. Its great that a sexy looking Vanessa Williams, the added attraction to the new season, has been dropped like a bomb into Wisteria Lane. She surely has upped the ante with her high sensuality quotient and her powerful screen presence as Renee Perry.

The popular soap is back with a slightly more compelling narrative and by the looks of it,it turns out that like every season, this neighborhood will have more than its fair share of scandals, shakeups and romances and the every first episode has established that. The soaps fascination for skimpily-clad women, bitchiness, gossip, affairs and hook-ups was evident right from season one and that interest has found its roots in the seventh season too.

Verdict:

Desperate Housewives is going strong even in its seventh season.
