A city court Saturday issued bailable warrant against former Army chief V K Singh after he failed to appear before it for a hearing in the defamation case filed by Lt Gen Tejinder Singh against him and four other senior serving Army officers.
Metropolitan Magistrate Jay Thareja issued the warrant since neither V K Singh nor his lawyer appeared before the court for the scheduled arguments. Gen Singhs lawyer was expected to submit arguments regarding the sanction for prosecution on Saturday. Observing that the lawyer seemed to be taking the trial lightly, the court issued the bailable warrant directing the former Army chief to appear personally in the case on July 27.
The advocate for the serving officers was also not present but represented by a junior advocate, due to which the hearing could not take place. The retired Army chief along with Vice Chief of Army Staff S K Singh,Lt Gen B S Thakur,Major Gen S L Narshiman and Lt Col Hitten have been accused by Lt Gen retd Tejinder Singh of misusing their official position to defame him.
Tejinder Singh had filed the complaint alleging that he was defamed by the Army through its press release issued on March 5,which accused him of offering a bribe of Rs 14 crore to the then Army chief to clear a deal of 600 trucks.
