With just a day left for retirement, the state government on Friday suspended a senior police official,well-known for his connection with the DMK,on charges of corruption.
ADGP K Thukkaiandi, who was moved to chief vigilance officer of one of the state transport corporations. after the new regime took over, was suspended following an inquiry into grave allegations, said the state Home Secretary in an order.
Sources said the senior officer was accused of abusing his official powers to grab a piece of land in a booming locality and registered it in the name of his wife Subbulakshmi using fake documents.
The suspension order also put a stringent condition on the officer, directing him not to leave the state capital without permission of the Home Secretary.
As the DIG of Crime Branch-CID,Thukkaiandi was the supervising officer in the TANSI land deal cases that led to present Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa being convicted and sentenced in 2000,and years later,as the ADGP of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption,he led the procedure on the disproportionate assets case against Jaya that is now being tried at the special court in Bangalore. It is said that it was his procedural knowledge that led to the hastening of the case, the future of which is closely connected to the future of Jaya.
Thukkaiandi has always been known to be close to the DMK,and has thus been on the cross-hairs of its rival AIADMK. He was promoted as the ADGP in January 2011 when the DMK was in power, and was put on three months compulsory wait when the regime changed after the last Assembly polls.
