In a stinging attack on Delhi Government,former chief minister Madan Lal Khurana on Tuesday accused it of 8220;picking the pockets8221; of citizens by substantially increasing taxes and tariffs in the name of development.

The senior BJP leader alleged that the government could not utilise Rs 6,000 crore central assistance given to it during 2005-06 to 2009-10 under the Jawahar Lal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission due to 8220;inefficiency8221; and instead decided to burden the citizens with additional taxes and tariffs.

Claiming that the city government could only utilise Rs 22 crore out of Rs 6,000 crore as it failed to submit project reports on time,he said if the government would have been able to get access to the fund then citizens could have been saved from increased taxes and tariffs.

8220;The government could utilise only Rs 22 crore out of Rs 6,000 crore allotted by the Central Government,8221; he said in a statement.

However,he did not explain the source of the figures.

Khurana also slammed the government for increasing VAT on a number of items including CNG and diesel as well as for deciding to increase the road tax on cars and bikes.
