Congress fields new face, murder accused in Allahabad

There seems to be confusion over whether he has formally joined the party or not.

The Congresss selection of candidates for the two remaining seats of Allahabad has left the partys rank and file surprised. For Phulpur,it has chosen a newcomer,Haji Mashooq Khan and Ramendra Ravi,a murder accused, for Allahabad West.

The only thing known about Khan is he has been a contractor for over a decade and doing the rounds for a ticket, said an office-bearer.

There seems to be confusion over whether he has formally joined the party or not. The question of joining the party is not important. My family has been with the Congress since the days of my grandfather8230; I do not have active political experience, but have not come to earn money. My business is spread in several states, said Khan.

Khan dismissed allegations that he was close to don Atique Ahmed, who is contesting on Apna Dal ticket.

Ravis candidature has also surprised many. This is only the second time in 10 years that a Dalit has been given ticket from a general seat, said UPCC spokesperson Kishore Varshneya. Ravi is a Pasi and has a murder case registered against him.
