The district administration of Gurgaon is working on a first-of-its-kind hi-tech greenhouse in Haryana to improve agriculture production and prepare good quality high-yielding and disease-free variety of plants. To be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 76 lakh in about 2,056 square metres of land, the greenhouse is expected to be completed by July this year.

According to Deputy Commissioner P C Meena, the hi-tech greenhouse will be helpful in growing more vegetable crops to meet the demand of vegetables in urban areas and providing farmers with quality seedlings at much reasonable prices. A team of scientists and experts will be deputed for growing quality seedlings at the greenhouse.

Meena says this hi-tech greenhouse is different from the existing greenhouses or polyhouses. Here, the temperature will be regulated as per requirement of the crop and outside atmospheric temperature will have no effect on it. While seedlings are grown under natural ventilation conditions in other greenhouses, the hi-tech greenhouse can ensure that seedlings are grown in all weather conditions. A similar one will come up in Rohtak too.

District Horticulture Officer Subhas Chander says farmers can get quality seedling produced here as per requirement, but they will have to share 50 per cent of the expenditure with the horticulture department and approach it at least 50 days in advance.

Using an irrigation technique that saves about 70 per cent of water as compared to normal practices, the greenhouse will be most suited for Gurgaon district that is facing depleting groundwater table.
