CBI may give clean chit to its prosecutor

No criminality, but disciplinary action likely for loose talks

The CBI is inclined to give a clean chit to its prosecutor A K Singh who was alleged to have colluded with a 2G scam accused Unitech MD Sanjay Chandra. It had registered a preliminary enquiry after an audio tape with alleged conversation between Singh and Chandra surfaced but have found no criminality on the part of Singh, sources claimed.

But the agency will wait for the orders of the Supreme Court where it had recently filed a status report on the issue. The report was submitted in a sealed envelope and will be taken up by the court on the next date of hearing, after which CBI will decide its next course of action.

Sources close to the probe said a disciplinary action may be recommended against Singh for indulging in loose talks. After quizzing Singh, the CBI found that he was bragging to the accused person by making such loose statements.

In the alleged tape,Singh can be heard detailing Chandra on the prosecutions development in the case and also advising him on the strategies to follow. The CBI found that there is a gross misconduct on the part of Singh. We have also sought a report on the tape, investigation and prosecution case of 2G from our chief prosecutor in the case,U U Lalit. Once the report is received,we will inform the SC, said a top CBI official.

He said once a disciplinary action is ordered against Singh, his contract with CBI may not get renewed. Also he may be barred from representing any government body in future. But the agency said so far no criminality has been found from the examination of tapes and suspects. The CBI had recently quizzed Chandra and DB Realty promoter Shahid Usman Balwa.

Unitech had denied all allegations. The CBI had concluded the tape was genuine.
