The CBI on Saturday chargesheeted Congress leader Jagdish Tytler and jailed arms dealer Abhishek Verma for allegedly forging the letterhead of then Minister of State for Home Ajay Maken in 2009. The CBI chargesheet said Tytler forged the letterhead and gave it to Verma.
It was found during investigation that a Chinese company named ZTE Telecom India Pvt Ltd was assured by Verma and Tytler of help in a visa- related matter. They had assured officials of the company that they would use their contact in the government to get visa extension for the employees of the company. For this purpose, they showed a letter, addressed to the Prime Minister of India and supposedly written by Ajay Maken,to assure the officials of ZTE Telecom regarding their claim of help, said the CBI chargesheet.
The unsigned letter which was shown to the officials of ZTE Telecom was a fake and forged one, which had never been written by Maken. The investigation also revealed that this fake letter was sent by Verma to his accomplice in the USA via email for entering into a deal with ZTE Telecom. It was also found that meetings took place between both accused persons and the officials of ZTE Telecom, when the said letter was shown to them by the accused persons and assurance was given to them for solving their visa problem, it added.
The case was first reported by The Indian Express in July 2012.
Stating that Verma allegedly demanded 1 million for getting the visas of nearly 300 employees sanctioned,CBI said no payments were made by ZTE.
The telecom firm, which is headquartered in Gurgaon, was named in the FIR but not chargesheeted.
