The Criminal Investigation Department on Saturday carried out raids at three houses belonging to arrested CPM leader and former West Bengal minister Sushanta Ghosh and recovered cartridges, according to top officers. Ghosh was arrested a couple of days ago in connection with recovery of at least five human skeletons suspected to be that of Trinamool Congress workers from near his house in West Midnapore in June.
CID teams carried out raids at Chandrakona,Benachapra and Ghoshs government flat at Minto Park. We have recovered around 10-15 rounds of cartridges from his Benachapra residence. No arms have been recovered yet. We would be also investigating the possible source of these ammunition. We have received incriminating evidence about his involvement in the case, said K Jayaraman,DIG Operations,CID. He said roles of all the leaders mentioned in the FIR were being examined.
The recovery of ammunition from Ghoshs Benachapra house is an indication that the CID will book him under the Arms Act as well and probe his links with arms dealing. Ghosh was alleged to have been part of a arms supply chain in Maoist-hit Junglemahal and nearby areas for quite some time. There have been a series of the arms recoveries after the assembly polls from the area.
The special team formed to investigate the case also interrogated Ghosh throughout the day. According to officials,Ghosh has alleged that several senior district CPM leaders were involved in the killing that took place on September 22,2002. He has been constantly trying to absolve himself and saying that the incident happened with complete knowledge of senior district CPM leaders, said a senior officer involved in the investigation.
CID officials also said that Ghosh has been constantly stressing on his absence on the day of the killing. We are also cross-checking the facts regarding his claims of absence on the day of the killing, said Jayaraman.
