China on Thursday said its aircraft carrier, which is expected to go on sea trials soon,is part of its defensive policy and poses no threat to the neighbouring countries.

Asked about reports that the aircraft carrier,a refurbished derelict ship reportedly purchased from Ukraine,is ready for sea trials,Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman,Hong Lei told a media briefing that while modernising its military,China will stick to a peaceful development path.

Chinas defence has strengthened with modernisation but there is a gap as compared to developed countries, he said.

Lei added,China pursues a policy of good relations with neighbourhood countries, and the Chinese military would never threaten them.

His comments came after Chief of the General Staff of the Peoples Liberation Army,Chen Bingde, said Chinas aircraft carrier, named Varyag,is under construction.

Chinese military projects it as mainly a carrier for training as it is the first one for its navy, and plans to build far bigger ships in the coming years.
