Capital goods companies8217; stocks tumbled by up to 5.69 per cent on the BSE today after the sector emerged as the worst performer in the Index of Industrial Production IIP figures,impacting the overall factory output.
The sector,which declined 15.2 per cent in July was the worst affected and pulled down the IIP to a 21-month low of 3.3 per cent,as against 9.9 per cent growth in July,2010.
Reacting to the data released this morning,the capital goods sector witnessed heavy selling pressure,with BGR Energy Systems slipping 4.95 per cent,Suzlon Energy 4.51 per cent and Punj Lloyd 4.44 per cent. Thermax and Alstom Projects fell 5.69 per cent and 5.12 per cent.
Among others,Crompton Greaves edged lower by 2.95 per cent,Larsen amp; Toubro by 2.64 per cent,Bhel by 1.68 per cent and Areva Tamp;D India by 0.04 per cent.
The losses led the BSE capital goods index to settle 2.13 per cent lower at 12,170.76.
Overall,the BSE Sensex plunged to 2-week low,down over 365 points or 2.17 per cent at 16,501.74.
