The Assam government has decided to start peace talks with the outlawed United Liberation Front of Assam ULFA without further delay, with a Cabinet meeting here on Wednesday morning approving such a decision. Disclosing this,Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said in a press conference that while the government had waited enough for ULFAs self-styled commander-in-chief Paresh Barua, the government could not afford to wait indefinitely. Talking about sovereignty, however,is out of question, Gogoi said.

We waited enough for Barua. But we cannot wait indefinitely. The people want talks. A national convention held last month wants talks. And,most importantly, most of the ULFA central committee leaders want talks, Gogoi said.

If Paresh Barua comes and joins the talks,it is well and good. He should realise that talks can be held in his absence too. I hope he will come, Gogoi said.
