The Bahujan Samaj Party BSP would not participate in the local bodies elections in Uttar Pradesh which are likely to be held in the state anytime after April 20. Earlier, the BSP government was under attack from opposition parties for deliberately delaying the local bodies elections.

The decision to keep the BSP away from the local bodies elections was announced by the BSP national president and chief minister Mayawati at a workers meeting at the party headquarters in Lucknow on Sunday.

Fearing largescale violence in the coming local bodies elections,Mayawati told her party workers that she is concerned about the safety of life and properties of her party workers and the incoming SP government cannot be trusted on the law and order front. People are aware that law and order, and crime control never remained in the agenda of SP government in the past, she told her party workers.

She said that no party functionary/worker would participate in the local bodies elections. She made it clear that if any party worker/functionary participated in the local bodies polls,he or she would face suspension from the party. She also tried to link the post-poll incidents with the local bodies polls. She said it is a part of SPs political game plan to reap political benefits in the coming local bodies polls.

She also reminded her party workers that unlike the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in which central police forces are deployed and held under central election commission, the local bodies elections are held under the vigilance of state police. She also added that the previous records of the SP government is not good in this matter.
