MOSCOW: An operation by Ukrainian and Russian intelligence services averted an assassination attempt on Russian PM Vladimir V. Putin,days before he hopes to secure a six-year presidential term. A report by Channel One said a band of would-be assassins were arrested in Ukrainian city of Odessa. Authorities were alerted to the group by an explosion in an apartment.

Syria approves new constitution in vote

AMMAN: Syrian artillery pounded rebel-held areas of Homs Monday as President Bashar al-Assads government announced voters had overwhelmingly approved a new constitution in a referendum. The Interior Ministry said the reformed constitution,which could keep Assad in power until 2028,had received 89.4 per cent approval from voters.

BAGHDAD: A Shia extremist group handed over a casket with the remains of the last US soldier missing in Iraq,an Iraqi lawmaker said Monday,drawing a close to a case that has anguished his family since his 2006 disappearance. Lawmaker Sami al-Askari said the body of Staff Sgt. Ahmed al-Taie were turned over as part of a prisoner swap deal between the government and Asaib Ahl al-Haq.
