Snowstorm in UK brings life to near standstill

London: Snowstorms swept across the UK bringing in the countrys most brutal winter in three decades which brought life to a near standstill,shutting down schools airports,disrupting train services and flights and leaving thousands of motorists stranded on highways. A cold snap also rained misery in much of the European mainland. Norway was among the coldest with temperatures falling to -41 degrees Celsius.

Survivor of atom bombs dies at 93

Tokyo: Tsutomu Yamaguchi,the only Japanese man recognised as a survivor of both US atomic bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 during World War II has died. Yamaguchi died on Monday after a battle with stomach cancer. He was 93. He had long been a certified hibakusha,or radiation survivor,of the August 9,1945,atomic bombing in Nagasaki.

Barak gets death threats,says official

Jerusalem: Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak has received dozens of death threats from people who fear that Jewish settlements in the West Bank will be disbanded,a defence official said on Wednesday. Dozens of threats have been received in recent weeks against the Defence Minister in the form of letters, said the official,who declined to be named.

Colombo: The political proxy of the Tamil Tigers unanimously backed on Wednesday the presidential bid of the General who crushed the separatists in May,saying it was the only way to thwart incumbent Mahinda Rajapaksas re-election. The Tamil National Alliance TNA,a group of ethnic Tamil parties that took orders from the LTTE,said Rajapaksas record on human rights and law and order made defeating him a priority.

Suicide bombing kills 6 Russian policemen

Makhachkala: A suicide bomber blew up an explosives-packed car at a police station in Russias North Caucasus on Wednesday,killing six officers and wounding at least 16,officials said. The bomber blew himself up at the station gate after police stopped him from driving through.
