Assets case: CBI opposes bail to Jagan Mohan

New Delhi: Claiming the trail of alleged disproportionate assets extended not only to different states beyond Andhra Pradesh but also several countries,the CBI on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court strongly opposing bail to YSR Congress chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy. In an affidavit submitted,the CBI alleged Jagan had enriched himself illegally by using the influence of his father and that granting him bail at this juncture would erode public confidence in the administration of justice.

Petroleum ministry official charged

New Delhi: A Delhi court has ordered framing of charges against a suspended Petroleum Ministry official for allegedly amassing assets exceeding his legal income by conniving with dealers in selling adulterated petroleum products. The CBI alleged that Uday Shankar acquired movable and immovable properties worth over Rs 1.11 crore in his name and that of his family members. He had also purchased benami assets between 1998 and 2004.

Kanda,Chadha custody extended

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Tuesday extended the judicial custody of former Haryana minister Gopal Goyal Kanda and that of his aide Aruna Chadha in the Geetika Sharma suicide case by 14 days. Conducting proceedings through video conferencing,Metropolitan Magistrate Bhupinder Singh remanded the duos judicial custody till September 25 after

the Delhi Police said that a probe was still on.

MEA conference to begin next week

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs will organise the fourth conference of Indian Heads of Missions from September 14-16 . Around 120 Indian ambassadors and high commissioners from across the world will participate in the event. The conference will be attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh besides other Cabinet ministers. President Pranab Mukherjee will also be called on.

Mirwaiz name on convocation list

SRINAGAR: Mirwaiz Umar Farooq,the chairman of the moderate faction of the Hurriyat,has registered as a research scholar to receive award at the annual convocation of the Kashmir University,scheduled later this month. President Pranab Mukherjee or Vice-President Hamid Ansari will be the chief guest on the occasion. Sources said the Mirwaizs name is at number one in the list of PhD scholars from the Islamic Studies department of the varsity.
