Chargesheet against Alagiri in assault case

MADURAI: A chargesheet was filed on Thursday against Union Minister M K Alagiri and 16 others in connection with the alleged assault on an election official and a videographer at a village in the district during the run-up to the April 13 assembly polls. Cases had been filed against Alagiri and 16 others,including Madurai Deputy Mayor P M Mannan,under various sections of the IPC,the police said.

HC stays murder trial against Kanchi seer

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Thursday stayed for eight weeks the trial in the Sankararaman murder case,in which Kanchi Sankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi is the prime accused,on a petition alleging an attempt to influence the court verdict. The order,in which the seer and 23 others are accused,was issued by Justice K Suguna on a petition filed by city-based advocate P Sundrarajan.

Navy gets fast attack warship INS Karuva

VISAKHAPATNAM: Indian Navy on Thursday commissioned highly maneuverable fast attack warship INS Karuva at the Eastern Naval Command here with an objective to thwart asymmetric threats emanating from the sea. The warship is capable of operating in shallow waters at high speeds and is fitted with enhanced fire power for day-night surveillance and is an extension of the efforts by the Indian Navy to step up vigil post the 26/11 Mumbai terror strikes.

Hasan Ali bail: SC extends stay

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday extended till September 2 the stay on the release on bail of Pune-based businessman Hasan Ali Khan who is accused in money laundering cases. The bail was granted earlier by the Bombay High Court.

Land grab: Ex-DMK minister,three held
