NEW DELHI: Over a week after a UAE court sentenced 17 Indians to death for killing a Pakistani and injuring three others,a law firm engaged by the Indian government Wednesday filed an appeal against the verdict. The case is likely to be heard in the middle of next month.

HC seeks Tiwari reply on plea for DNA test

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court Wednesday asked veteran Congress leader N D Tiwari to explain why a DNA test should not be conducted on him to verify the allegation of Rohit Shekhar,who claims to be his son. The court also sought a response to the 105 photographs in which Tiwari 84 is seen with Rahul and his mother.

One held in honour killing case

CHANDIGARH: Police Wednesday said they have arrested Ravinder Gupta,who is suspected of murdering Vikas,who had an affair with his daughter,from a village in Panipat. The village mahapanchayat had on Monday given an ultimatum to the police to arrest those responsible for the murder in 48 hours.

Separatists support employees strike

SRINAGAR: Even as the Jamp;K Police arrested nearly two dozen leaders of the Employees Joint Action Committee,who have been striking for five days to press the state to pay arrears to them in accordance with Sixth Pay Commission,both factions of Hurriyat Conference lent support to the employees. The employees are justified to struggle for their genuine rights, hardline Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali shah Geelani said on Wednesday.

 

Maharashtra seeks patent for Kolhapuris

MUMBAI: Maharashtra Wednesday said it would apply for a patent for Kolhapuri chappals. Minister of State for Industries Sachin Ahir said the government had taken the decision to apply for a Geographical Indication patent for the chappals,made in Kolhapur,as they are being copied by large chains and local workers in Kolhapur are being denied the benefits.

Somali pirates free one more vessel

RAJKOT: Somali pirates have released one more hijacked vessel Nal-Narayan after it ran out of fuel near the Magdishu Port in Somalia. This is the fourth Indian vessel,of the eight hijacked,that the pirates have released since last Sunday.
