CBI arrests Joint Commissioner of Customs
Mumbai: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Joint Commissioner of Customs (an IRS officer of 1993 batch) posted at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) Mumbai for possessing disproportionate assets more than his known sources of income. CBI alleged the accused,Hemant Kothikar,while working in Customs Department,from September 6,1993 to July 24,2004 amassed assets worth Rs 3.66 crore in his name and in the names of his wife and relatives. He is in CBI custody.
3 Maoists killed after police raid their camp
ORISSA: Three Maoists are believed to have been killed after a joint police party of Keonjhar and Jajpur districts raided a major CPI (Maoist) camp on Keonjhar-Dhenkanal-Jajpur borders Monday afternoon. Keonjhar SP Ashis Kumar Singh said a clear picture would emerge only on Tuesday as the exchange of fire was still on.The police have not recovered any bodies but found laptops and Maoist literature from the camps. Meanwhile,a 28-year-old jawan from the anti-Maoist Special Action Force shot himself at a camp in Koraput district.
EC: Dont use places of worship for polls
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Against the backdrop of the Kerala Catholic Bishops Councils (KCBC) recent voting guidelines to the laity,the State Election Commission on Monday warned against using places of worship for election campaign. A general instruction was issued to the public based on the complaints regarding the KCBC letter which was read in Catholic Churches,said commission law secretary A Nizamudheen.
PCs saffron terror remark to be probed
AHMEDABAD: The Ahmedabad Metropolitan Court on Monday ordered an inquiry into the defamation complaint against Union Home Minister P Chidambaram for using the words saffron terrorism. The court has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police (zone VI) to submit a report in 90 days. A priest from Radhanpur in Patan district,Swami Nityanand Tirth,filed the complaint against Chidambaram,stating the colour saffron was associated with the saints and by referring this colour to terrorism,Chidambaram had defamed them.
Man murders wife in Jalandhar
JALANDHAR: A man murdered his wife after he doubted her character at Maqdoompura in Jalandhar. The accused,Rajinder Bittu, who had come back to India from Italy just a couple of months back,killed his wife Aarti by strangulating her. Aartis father said the two got married around eight years ago and have two children.
